Seamus French

Seamus French joined Anglo Coal Australia as the Chief Executive Officer in November 2007. Following Anglo American’s restructure in October 2009, Seamus was promoted to Chief Executive Officer of Anglo American's Metallurgical Coal business.
Born and educated in Ireland, Seamus gained a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) before working in Germany for seven years. He has extensive mining experience in a range of commodities including: coal, nickel, gold, copper and uranium.
Before joining Anglo American, Seamus was Vice President Business Excellence of BHP Billiton. He has also held various positions with WMC including: Executive General Manager Copper-Uranium Business Unit, General Manager Operations Nickel Business Unit, General Manager Kwinana Nickel Refinery, General Manager St Ives Gold Mine.
Rod Elliott
Head of Marketing and Transportation

Rod joined Anglo American in September 2002 in the position of General Manager Marketing and Transportation, and is a member of the Executive leadership team. Rod’s career has included marketing and senior management positions with a number of international resource companies in Australia, United Kingdom and the United States. He has been a director on board for the Los Angeles Port, a Director of Port Waratah Coal Services Limited (Newcastle) and Newcastle Coal Shippers Pty Ltd. Rod is currently a Director of Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd (Mackay) and Half Tide Marine Pty Ltd (Mackay). Rod is married with three children.
Gerhard Ziems
Chief Financial Officer
Gerhard Ziems joined Anglo American’s Metallurgical Coal Executive Leadership Team in January 2011 in the position of Chief Financial Officer. Gerhard came to Anglo American from Downer EDI Mining, one of the largest mining services providers in Australia and overseas, where he was Chief Financial Officer/Director. Gerhard brings extremely strong commercial and business performance skills and experience to Anglo American, having held senior executive roles in the Leighton Group both locally and internationally. He has also worked overseas with Bilfinger Berger, a leading project delivery group for industry and infrastructure.
As well as having a strong financial and commercial background, Gerhard also holds a civil engineering degree, which he combined with a Masters in Finance. He has related construction experience. He is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and FEI (Financial Executives International of Australia).
Mike Oswell
Head of Safety and Sustainable Development
Mike Oswell was appointed to the position of Head of Safety and Sustainable Development for Metallurgical Coal in June 2011. Prior to this, Mike was Group Head of Safety, based in the Anglo American London head office.
In his role at Metallurgical Coal, Mike's team is driving safety improvement across all sites through the implementation of the Target Zero Action Plans while expanding and applying his considerable expertise more broadly into other critical disciplines within sustainable development.
David Diamond
Head of Human Resources
Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting)
With 30 years’ experience in the petroleum and resources sectors, David initially joined Shell at its Geelong Refinery in 1978. Since that time, David has held a number of senior roles with Shell both within Australia and overseas.
David was appointed Commercial Manager to Capcoal in 1995; during this time the Shell Coal assets were sold to Anglo American in 2000 and David was appointed to the role of Commercial Manager in a Joint Venture between Shell and the Queensland Government to construct and operate the Callide Power Station in Central Queensland.
David joined Anglo American upon the completion of the Callide project and was the Global Risk and Assurance Manager before being appointed to the role of Regional Head of Human Resources in November 2007.
Joe Keane
Head of Projects and Engineering
Diploma Mechanical Engineering, Master of Business Administration
Appointed Regional Head of Projects & Engineering in 2008, Joe is based in our Brisbane office. Migrating to Australia from Ireland in 1974, Joe has more than 35 years global project and engineering management experience, and has held senior roles within a number of mining operating companies including BHP Billiton, Worsley Alumina and Iluka Resources. Prior to joining Anglo American, Joe held the position of Senior Director of Engineering for Barrick Gold Corporation, based in their Toronto Head Office. His strengths derive from his extensive engineering management background in the mining and processing industries.
Nick Barlow
Head of Resource Development and Operational Excellence
Nick Barlow was appointed Head of Resource Development and Operational Excellence for Anglo American’s metallurgical coal business in April 2010. Nick joined Anglo American from Rio Tinto, where he was General Manager Technical for Rio Tinto Coal Australia. Nick has had extensive local and overseas management experience through a 25 year career with Rio Tinto including senior operational, technical and management roles in coal, gold and copper in Australia, USA, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Nick is a mining engineer and is a strong believer in leveraging off the good work that others have done and increasing collaboration across the Anglo American Group.
Mark Heaton
General Manager - Open Cut Operations
Mark was appointed to the position of General Manager Open Cut Operations in December 2010, with responsibility for the Metallurgical Coal business’ Callide, Capcoal Open Cut, Drayton and Foxleigh operations. Mark is a Civil Engineer who started in the mining industry in the Technical Services area. He has worked for Anglo American since the acquisition of the Shell Coal assets in 2000. He has been a long standing Metallurgical Coal manager, having worked his way through to mine manager, before gaining General Manager experience at both the Callide and Drayton operations.
Mark has made a great contribution to the business during his years of service and is currently focused on replicating many of Drayton’s best practice processes and systems across the Metallurgical Coal Open Cut operations.
Carlos Davila
Head of Strategy and Business Development
BSc(Eng), PhD, ARSM, DIC, CertBA(WA)
Carlos joined Anglo American in 2006 and now heads the strategy and business development functions.
Carlos was born in Venezuelan and educated in England where he gained bachelor in engineering (Metallurgy) and doctorate degrees before moving to Australia. He has extensive experience in a variety of commodities having held senior operations and business roles in the steel, iron ore and metallurgical coal industries. He has strong business acumen and negotiating skills having led for Anglo American the acquisitions of Foxleigh, Foxleigh North, MBD Energy and the divestments of Dawson seamgas business and Bylong, Sutton Forest and Surat basin assets.
Prior to join Anglo American he worked for BHP Billiton for 19 years in various locations in Australia in a variety of operational, technical, management and business development roles.
John Cleland
Head of Infrastructure
John Cleland joined Anglo American in September 2011 and heads up Metallurgical Coal’s Infrastructure team. John has extensive executive and non-executive experience in rail, port and energy networks and infrastructure assets.
Prior to joining Anglo American, John was CEO of WestNet Rail and WestNet Infrastructure Group, having spent 11 years with Wesfarmers Limited in a range of financial, commercial and business management roles in a variety of industry sectors.
Jon Richards
Head of Corporate Affairs

Jon Richards joined Anglo American in September 2011 and is responsible for parliamentary, media, community and internal stakeholder strategy and engagement. Prior to working with Anglo American, Jon was Head of Parliamentary Affairs with National Grid based in London. He was previously Director of Corporate Affairs for National Grid Australia in Melbourne where he was part of the team that successfully delivered the Basslink Electricity Interconnector between Victoria and Tasmania.
Jon has extensive government experience including Chief of Staff to the Leader of the Victorian National Party and Press Secretary to the Premier of Victoria. A journalist by trade, Jon brings with him a wealth of experience to lead the Corporate Affairs department at Metallurgical Coal.
Jon lives in Brisbane with his wife Serena and their three children Samuel, Angus and Josephine.
