ASSOCIATE PROGRAMME
We are recruiting a number of positions for our open cut and underground operations to undergo a para-professional Associate Programme in mining and safety support. These programmes begin in January each year. We are looking for motivated people who have a genuine interest in establishing a career in the mining industry. Because these positions perform essential functions in our mining and processing operations on site, we are looking for people who are interested in living in mining towns.
In Australia, we provide three different development programmes across the business:
1. Mining Associate (Underground)
2. Mining Associate (Surface)
3. Safety Associates
The Associate Programme is a structured four-year programme combining on-the-job experience and further education. These roles will be supported with University study and industry training. At the end of the programme, you will have achieved an Associate Degree and credit towards a Bachelor degree. Mining Associates are known in the team as Technical Officers and in your day-to-day duties you will be an important part of the technical team by providing professional support duties. Similarly, Safety Associates work to provide safety support to professionals in our operations.
Our Associate Programmes are offered in a number of our operations, located in Central Queensland and New South Wales. We provide our Associates with extensive support to assist you to progress in your on-the-job duties, as well as your studies.
Taking up one of our Associate Programmes can provide you with an excellent first step in establishing yourself in a career as a mining professional.
SURVEY CADET PROGRAMME
The surveying cadetship is a slightly different and a more specialised cadetship focusing on mine surveying. The surveying cadet studies either the external four-year Associate Degree or continues on to complete the six-year Bachelor Degree of Spatial Science Technology. On completion of the Bachelor Degree the cadet can enter into a two-year Competency Training Agreement which leads to certification as a Registered Mine Surveyor. Normal daily survey work can be carried out by an Associate Degree qualified surveyor but if you want to supervise other surveyors and certify the accuracy of mine plans you will have to progress to Registration. It is up to the cadet how far they want to progress as a surveyor.
Surveyors are involved in every aspect of the field operations and at times their role can be physically demanding. In our open cuts the surveyor places pegs where the dragline must dig, or a new road is to be established. Once the coal is exposed, the surveyor accurately measures the tonnage that is available to send to the customer. In our undergrounds the surveyor drills marks into the roof to control the direction of mining and the installation of conveyor belts. When an area is mined he calculates the tonnages of coal and stone that have been removed. In both the open cuts and underground, accurate mine plans have to be computer generated to show where mining has taken place.
Eligibility
We are an equal opportunity employer and we encourage applications from men and women, including people who identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, people with disabilities and those from non-English speaking backgrounds. To apply, you will need to be an Australian resident or hold the right to work in Australia.
APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS:
Apprenticeships and traineeships are intended to fill a gap in our skill base at our coal operations. During your time, you will be a useful member of the team, supporting mining technical staff in a number of hands-on duties.
Whilst you have a potential career path into Engineering, we can accommodate the long term in the Engineering support role.
It is expected that most apprentices and trainees will work on the appropriate roster as part of their crew timetable.
Types of apprenticeships:
- Mechanical – diesel fitters, boilermaker/welders, fitters and turners
- Electrical – electricians, electronic tradespersons
How and when do I apply?
Our apprenticeship and traineeship intake begins annually between July and November. The website will state when applications open, and you can submit your application on our website. It is intended that all apprentices and trainees will begin on sites in early January for an orientation and induction.
Training structure:
You will undertake structured training in working areas of the mine and rotation of duties to maximise your exposure to various facets of the operation.
Our support and commitment:
We will support the apprentices and trainees with time off for block release training.
Site support:
A mentor will be appointed for apprentices and trainees and they will have regular contact from their General Manager and HR Manager. The mentor will guide and support the apprentice and trainee in such matters as their job duties, studies and broader lifestyle and participation at the site.
Ideal incumbent:
Apprentices will most likely be between the ages of 15 to 19 or mature age candidates – looking for an entry point into the mining industry. We will be targeting people, predominantly from regional and rural communities, who have a strong interest in remaining in a mining community long term. They may be school leavers or have some work experience. They may also be local persons looking for a career change.
Employment:
Anglo American mine sites are not always the employers of apprentices and trainees – we can be the host sites. Your employment may be through one of our preferred training providers, MRAEL or the Gladstone Area Group Scheme, to whom you will be indentured and who take care of all administrative processes, training plans and block releases for the attainment of nationally recognised competencies.
However, please note that with our Drayton, Foxleigh, Moranbah and Callide mine sites, you will be engaged as an Anglo American Metallurgical Coal Pty Ltd employee.
Some of the criteria you might need to consider in your application:
- Have completed school to at least School Certificate level (by the end of 2009), with a good result in Maths and English. Applicants who have also completed a pre-apprenticeship course will be well regarded
- Have a strong desire to gain a trade qualification in either the Electrical or Mechanical trade
- Interest in working in the mining industry and in a hands-on technical role.
- Willingness to locate or relocate to remote locations
- Computer experience
- Sound interpersonal and intrapersonal skills
- Driver’s licence
- Australian Residency
- Be safety conscious of yourself and others.
- Be able to work cooperatively in a team environment
- Be able to organise your own transport to and from work
- Be prepared to give the best of yourself in developing and applying the skills required to be successful
- Preference will be given to applicants who live in the local Shires, however, applicants from other areas will also be considered
Other criteria will depend on the specific role or vacancy. Details will be provided closer to the advertising timetable.
Selection process and timetable:
The successful applicants will be selected by us and the host sites. You will complete interviews and undergo a set of aptitude and psychological assessments. The process will also be supported with reference checking, site visits and medicals. The process will be coordinated by Central Resourcing, Site HR and technical staff.
Your interest in our organisation is greatly appreciated and we wish you all the very best in your future endeavours.
