Safety team at Dawson mine receives award The team from Dawson mine with Seamus French receiving their Chief Executive Safety Award

The Dawson mine maintenance team received the Anglo American Chief Executive Safety Award (CESA) for Safety Best Practice in 2009 for designing new maintenance platforms for CAT797 trucks.

The recognition did not stop there for Australia at the CESA ceremony, with its two other finalists in the awards, Drayton’s Maintenance Team and Capcoal’s Surface Operations Electrical Maintenance Department both receiving Highly Commended awards. The annual CESAs highlight the tremendous work undertaken across the Group to make the workplace safe.

Dawson mine General Manager at the time Rick Fairhurst said Dawson’s achievement is testament to the winning team’s collaborative, team based approach to problem solving.

“The award affirms the very real improvement to risk reduction that can be achieved when those who are doing a job take the time to engineer out hazards and reduce the risk of the work,” Rick said.

Designed, built and now used by Dawson Haul Truck Superintendent Peter Plummer, Fitter Trev Evans, Reliability Engineer Chris Michael and Apprentice Boiler Maker Edward Homer, the maintenance platforms eliminate unnecessary safety risks associated with working at the back of trucks by reducing working at height risks and providing safe and easy access for employees.

“Working together to identify safer work alternatives and transferring the knowledge across the company is essential for Anglo American to reach its target of zero harm,” Rick said.

“On behalf of all of us at Dawson and the rest of the team in Australia I’d like to congratulate Peter Plummer and the maintenance team involved in developing this system which has made a significant improvement in reducing the risk of working at height in the chassis area of the truck.”

Metallurgical Coal’s other stand-outs at the ceremony were Drayton’s Maintenance team for developing a new access platform to prevent a fall from height when removing grizzly plates from a dump hopper, while Capcoal’s Electrical Maintenance Department was recognised for their significant milestone achievement of 18 years Lost Time Injury (LTI) free.

Speaking at the event, Group Chief Executive Cynthia Carroll said: “Safety is a core Anglo American value and nowhere is it better brought to life than through the Chief Executive Safety Awards.

“It allows us to take stock of all the great safety work being done and to recognise and thank all those involved for the part they play.

“Each of the nominees for this year’s awards exemplifies what safety in Anglo American is all about: showing genuine care and concern, taking responsibility for your own safety and that of others and the continual pursuit of outstanding safety performance.”
