Graduate Profile – Mining Engineer

null

Name: Bridget Alldridge
University attended: University of Queensland (UQ)
Degree obtained: Bachelor of Engineering – Mining (Hons)
Age: 24

Bridget joined Anglo Coal Australia’s (ACA) Graduate Program in February 2005, after graduating with a degree in Mining Engineering. Having spent a number of summer holidays working at ACA mine sites, Bridget was keen to gain more experience working with one of Australia’s leading coal producers.

Before starting on ACA’s Gradate Program what mining experience did you have?
I received an ACA scholarship during my second year at university and was then eligible to apply for vacation work through ACA.

At the end of my second year of uni I worked for three months at Callide, which is an open cut mine located near Biloela, and following my third year of uni I worked for three months at Moranbah North which is an underground operation. I spent another two months at the Moranbah North during my fourth year working on my thesis.

What made you want to join ACA?
When I was at uni I was interested in coal mining and considering ACA is one of the big players I was keen to get a start with them.

The fact that ACA has a well-established Graduate Program which is highly regarded in the mining industry was another drawcard to joining them.

What are some of the most positive features of working for ACA?
ACA is packed full of great people to work with and learn from, and one of the best things about working at ACA are the endless opportunities for employees to gain experience at a variety of world class mining operations in both Australia and overseas with Anglo American.

The location of ACA’s mine sites is another plus, as they are all situated close to established towns and within an easy drive to the coast.

During your Graduate Program with ACA what different sites have you worked at and what responsibilities have you had?
I spent two years working at Callide where I began my first year by planning and scheduling the push dozers and any mined land rehabilitation, and later worked as the Engineer for Truck and Shovel Prestrip operations. In my second year I worked as the Drill and Blast Engineer.

I then was seconded to Capcoal Underground Operation’s Bundoora Mine, near the town of Middlemount. For five months I worked underground as a Mine Technician.

For the past three months I’ve been working as the Longwall Mining Engineer at Grasstree Mine, which is situated next door to Bundoora.

What are your current duties?
As Grasstree’s Longwall Mining Engineer I’m responsible for supervising and co-ordinating longwall outbye contractors as well as performing the role of site representative for the Longwall Secondary Support contract.

I’m also responsible for reviewing and maintaining the longwall reporting systems and assisting with the development of the Safety and Health Management System for the longwall department.

What makes the ACA Graduate Program so attractive?
The opportunity to work in both open cut and underground operations is one of the great aspects of the ACA Graduate Program, as it provides graduates with the opportunity to gain a breadth of experience across the business.

Networking with other ACA graduates from other disciplines and sites is encouraged and facilitated by holding graduate peer days twice a year and is an ideal way to meet new people and share ideas.
