The Moranbah North mine is located in the northern part of Queensland's Bowen Basin around 18 kilometres north of the town of Moranbah.

Mining commenced at Moranbah North in 1998. The mining lease covers approximately 100 square kilometres.

Coal is mined from the Goonyella Middle Seam approximately 200 metres below the surface. In 2004, an underground Longwall mine with two development panels and a bord and pillar operation were added.

Safety Performance:

In 2004 the mine recorded a LTIFR of 8.2 and TRCFR of 49.3.

Moranbah North mine was recommended for Australian Health & Safety Standard AS4801 certification in November 2004.

Environmental Performance:

Moranbah North mine achieved the International Standard for Environmental Management, ISO140001 in November 2004.

Community

Moranbah is a purpose built town in the northern part of Belyando shire. It was established in 1971 and is currently home to 8,000 permanent residents. Moranbah is an easy two-hour drive from the coastal town of Mackay.

Visitors to Moranbah can access flights from Brisbane to Mackay Domestic Airport through Virgin Blue, Jetstar or Qantas. Direct flights to Moranbah from Brisbane are also available daily through Macair.

Employees of Anglo Coal's Moranbah North mine reside in the Grosvenor Housing Estate. Accommodation is available in single and double storey four bedroom houses or two bedroom duplexes, all of which have evaporative cooling systems and air conditioning in the bedrooms.


Grosvenor Village, operated by ESS Worldwide (owned by Moranbah North mine) is a modern single persons village, fully equipped with a dining hall and on-site laundry facilities.

Climate and weather

Average yearly rainfall: 1585 mm. A large proportion falls in the months December through to March with the driest months being August/September.

Temperature: 29-30 degrees during the summer/wet months and 21-25 degrees during the winter/dry months. Minimum overnight temperatures are typically around 23 degrees during the summer/wet months and 13-14 degrees during the winter/dry months.
