Seamgas
1.Gas operations
Dawson Seamgas was acquired in 2002 as part of the Moura mine acquisition. The existing facility includes a pipeline connecting to the main southern Queensland commercial network.
During 2006 the adjacent gas assets owned by Origin Energy were acquired. These included a producing gas field and connecting gas pipeline to the Queensland network. Combined production has been increased to 9 PJ per annum representing about 8% of the Queensland market and is now one of the significant coal seam methane operations in the state.
The nearby Ammonium Nitrate Plant is an important customer for the gas produced in turn producing explosives for consumption at the Dawson mine.
Dawson Seamgas is located on the Dawson mining lease in central Queensland near the township of Moura.
Ownership and operation: Dawson Seamgas is held through a joint venture, comprising Anglo Coal Australia (51%) and Mitsui Coal Holdings (49%).
ACA’s gas business is focused on development and growth opportunities in the areas where Anglo Coal Australia has gas rights as part of their mining operations.
2. Gas projects
Moranbah North/Grosvenor
Gas has been flared from pre-drainage holes since 2001. During 2005 an agreement was signed with CH4 to allow them to extract gas from the Moranbah North mine area by extending their existing drainage activities taking place on the adjacent Grosvenor area.
Capcoal gas supply
Gas from the combined German Creek operations will be utilised for on-site power generation. Energy Development (EDL) is developing a 32 MW reciprocating engine power unit which will use pre and post drainage gas associated with underground mining.
